Robert E. Wahlers

Robert  E. WahlersRobert E. Wahlers, MS, CFRE, is the Vice President of Development for Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations (MHAF) where he oversees gift planning, annual giving and the grants development programs. Since February of 2010, he has served as the leader for the gift planning program across the Meridian Health System and has also had administrative functions as the Senior Director of Development & Gift Planning and Interim Executive Director for Southern Ocean Medical Center. He served as Executive Director of the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation from 2012 to 2014 raising more than $20 million including more than $11 million through their Next Step Capital Campaign.

Robert holds a Master of Science degree in Human Development & Leadership with a concentration in Nonprofit Management from Murray State University and a BA Degree in Psychology from Muhlenberg College.

Robert, who came to Meridian Health from Virtua where he was AVP for Major & Planned Giving, has spent the last 23 years of his career in non-profit fundraising with the Boy Scouts of America, the American Cancer Society, Virtua Foundation and now Meridian Health.  He is also an Adjunct Professor on the faculty at Columbia University for their Masters of Science Program in Fundraising Management where he teaches the Annual and Capital Campaigns and Major Gifts courses.

Robert is a Certified Fund Raising Executive and is professionally associated with AFP, AHP and PPP.  He is a past National Board Member with the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning (2010, 2011 and 2012) and also served as Chairman of the Education Advisory Committee for the AFP International Conference (2010, 2011, and 2012) and on the AFP Committee on Directorship (2011 and 2012). He is a past Board Member of the Gift Planning Council of New Jersey and the NJ Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals where he served as President in 2008 and 2009.

Robert and Brian Sagrestano, JD, CFRE wrote their first book entitled The Philanthropic Planning Companion:  The Fundraiser's and Professional Advisor's Guide to Charitable Gift Planning that was published by John Wiley & Sons and released in June, 2012.  It was the winner of the 2013 AFP Skystone Partners Research Award as the best new fundraising book for that year.  They have also recently released two new books, Getting Started in Charitable Gift Planning and Getting Started in Charitable Gift Planning - The Resource Book, published by Charity Channel.
